Premier League referee Mike Dean has informed police after his family received a number of abusive messages and death threats. Dean has received criticism for sending off Southampton defender Jan Bednarek last Tuesday. Bednarek’s dismissal was overturned on appeal and this made the fans to turn against him. the situation went even worse when he showed red card against West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek which was also a pure mistake from one of the best referee’s in the Premier League. Later Soucek’s red card was also rescinded.

Professional Game Match Officials Limited managing director Riley said: “Threats and abuse of this nature are totally unacceptable and we fully support Mike’s decision to report these messages his family received to the police.

“Nobody should be victim of abhorrent messages like this. Online abuse is unacceptable in any walk of life and more needs to be done to tackle the problem.”

The defender will work under compatriot Thomas Tuchel, who recently replaced Frank Lampard.
