This Monday is not just any day for Luis Medina Cantalejo, since last December 1, officially the new president of the Technical Referees Committee in place of Velasco Carballo.
And it is important because it will be this Monday, December 6, when he designates for the first time in the League. Designation that, as it is a public holiday, will do so electronically along with the other two members of the Professional Arbitration Appointment Committee that is also completed by the former international referee and as representative of the League, Arturo Dauden Ibáñez, together with the former referee Evaristo Puentes Leira. The latter, as we already anticipated in Mundo Deportivo, recently appointed by the CSD after more than two years with the vacant position.
Some appointments that will not be known until next Thursday, December 9, and where the great unknown is to know who will be chosen for the Madrid derby that will close the day at the Santiago Bernabéu between Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid. A match that should initially be called by an international referee. Everyone except Carlos del Cerro from Madrid.
Mateu has called five derbies, all at the Bernabéu
Mateu Lahoz is the big favorite. The Valencian international, an expert in Madrid derbies, has yet to whistle either team this season. So far he has called five duels between the two Madrid teams in his refereeing career. All of them curiously in the white stadium with a background of three white victories for two of the rojiblanco team. The last one was on the thirteenth day of last season. Curiously, the same day December 12 and where the whites won 2-0.
Another option is the Canarian Alejandro Hernández since he has not whistled a Madrid team for thirteen days. It was during Real Madrid’s visit to the Villamarín Stadium where the white team won by the minimum. It is the only precedent.
The Basque Ricardo de Burgos Bengoechea is another option to consider. The white team has been whistled on the twelfth day in Elche and Atlético de Madrid on the third, also curiously during the visit of the Elche to the Metropolitan Stadium.
And within these possible options we must include the Andalusian Munuera Montero. His last precedent was Atlético de Madrid-Real Sociedad on matchday 10, whom he also whistled at his debut in Vigo. He has not yet crossed paths with Ancelotti’s team in the current campaign
Gil Manzano, Martínez Munuera and Cuadra Fernández are discarded
Gil Manzano is ruled out because this Saturday he just whistled Real Madrid in Anoeta a week after also leading the rojiblanco team in the win against Cádiz. In addition, the rojiblanco team’s duel had already whistled on the fifth day against Athletic, marked by the expulsion of Joao Félix.
The same happens with the Valencian Martínez Munuera who was at the Metropolitan Stadium on Saturday in the duel between Atlético de Madrid and Mallorca. The last time he whistled Real Madrid was on matchday 14 in Granada. He has also directed Atlético this season in the visit to Espanyol on matchday four.
The Murcian Sanchez Martínez would also have options but is almost ruled out by the precedents of the campaign. The duel at the Bernabéu against Sevilla has been whistled two days ago. Just a week before he was at the Metropolitano at Atlético – Osasuna. And let’s not forget that he was the referee chosen for the classic at the Camp Nou in Barcelona-Real Madrid. But even before he had already been in the white stadium in the white 5-2 win against Celta on the fourth day.
Soto Grado could also be in the pools since he will be international from January 1, 2022 but is also ruled out given the previous appointments of this season with the two capital teams. The rojiblanco team was the last in the Mestalla against Valencia on the thirteenth day. In the tenth he whistled Ancelotti’s team precisely at the Bernabéu against Osasuna. But he also loses options if we consider that he was designated for Atlético – Barcelona on matchday eight or Atlético Madrid – Villarreal on matchday three. In addition, he already directed the debut of the white team in Vitoria against Alavés.
Finally there is the Madrid referee based in the Balearic Islands. Guillermo Cuadra Fernández and who is also eliminated from the equation because he is right now in the Arab Cup as VAR.
