The derby returns to the Santiago Bernabéu

The Santiago Bernabeu again hosts this Sunday, December 12, a derby between the Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid. Something that has not happened since February 1, 2020 when the white coliseum hosted the last derby between the two greats of the capital.

On February 1, 2020, Real Madrid won 1-0 with a goal from Benzema and nobody could have imagined that it would take more than a year for the Bernabéu to return to being the scene of a derby. Between the pandemic and the fact that Real Madrid decided to play in the Say Stefano, It caused that until this Sunday, the Bernabéu was orphaned of derbies.

The Real Madrid stadium, of course, will not wear its best clothes because of the remodeling works that the Bernabéu is undergoing. Some works with which last year’s derby was already played, but which did not prevent the stadium from filling up. Something that will not happen this time because there are areas of the Bernabéu where there is no public for the works. Thus, the expected capacity will be about 60,000 people for this Sunday’s derby.

The Bernabéu is not a stadium that has been bad at Atlético de Madrid in recent years. With Simeone on the bench, the rojiblanco team has played eight league derbies at the Bernabéu with a balance of three victories for Atleti, two for Real Madrid and three draws.

The last derby jThe game between the two teams with Real Madrid as host was last season at Di Stéfano. It ended with a 2-0 white victory.
