Robert Lewandowski tied for the best total of goals in a calendar year on Friday night (69). In the 21st century, only Lionel Messi has done better, by far.
It was time ! While Bayern Munich quietly mastered their case against Wolfsburg (4-0), it was not until the 87th minute to see Robert lewandowski (finally) to find the net, of a recovery from the left closely, on a delivery of the head of Jamal Musiala.
Lewandowski scoring is the story of almost every weekend in the Bundesliga. But this one has a special flavor. Thanks to the goal, the Pole scored his 43rd Bundesliga goal of the year with Bayern. He thus offered himself a new record, exceeding the 42 goals of the inevitable Gerd Müller in 1972.
And that’s not all for Lewandowski. With this 69th goal in 59 matches, the former Dortmund player also takes the opportunity to equal the best total of goals of Cristiano Ronaldo over a calendar year. In 2013, the Portuguese, not far from being at the top of his game, had also found the nets 69 times … in 59 games.
Still far from Messi
In the 21st century, only one player has done better. It is of course about Lionel messi, during his unreal year 2012, when the Argentine genius had scored 91 goals in 68 matches. A record which appears in the Guinness Book, where Messi had dethroned… Gerd Müller, and his 85 goals in 60 games in 1972. And a total which was undoubtedly out of reach for Lewandowski.
Note that Ronaldo received the Ballon d’Or in 2013, just like Messi the previous year. This year, Lewandowski finished second in the poll, like Müller in 1972. “Der Bomber” was beaten at the time by his teammate Franz Beckenbauer.
Best total of goals scored by a player in a calendar year for 40 years:
