While some imagined he could win the 2021 Golden Ball, Karim Benzema finally finished far from the podium.
The Golden Ball is decidedly not successful for Karim Benzema. The Real Madrid striker, who had never finished higher than 16th, admittedly had his best ranking on Monday. But while many observers imagined him to be able to mingle in the fight between Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski, the Frenchman finished well away from the two men. So much so that the former Lyonnais does not even appear on the Ballon d’Or podium!

Worse, finally overtaken by Jorginho, for many in the coronations of Chelsea in the Champions League and Italy at the Euro, Karim Benzema also finished very far from the Italian midfielder. While the Blues player has compiled 460 points, against 613 for Lionel Messi and 580 for Robert Lewandowski, KB9 has only collected 229 points, almost half as much as the former Neapolitan. N’Golo Kanté, fifth, and Cristiano Ronaldo, sixth, were also not so far with 186 and 178 units respectively.
The lobbying of Real Madrid will therefore not have been enough. Karim Benzema, absent from the ceremony, was also sober when reacting to the verdict of the Ballon d’Or. “Thank you to everyone who supported me. I play football for you, and the show continues », he wrote on Twitter.
